Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

General Manager Larry Himes said he would promote two to six minor leaguers on Sept. 1 from the White Sox`s Triple-A and Double-A affiliates.

Himes said he`ll add ”role players, someone just to help out, maybe some extra pitching.”

Among the top candidates are left-handed pitcher Grady Hall, who has won 13 games for Vancouver, most in the Pacific Coast League; Steve Rosenberg, who has been moved to the starting rotation in Vancouver; and Shawn Hillegas, who has been to Chicago once already this year. The Sox will also likely bring up outfielder Orsino Hill and catcher Matt Stark.

Back patting: Manager Jeff Torborg was told that Oakland`s Tony LaRussa picked him as manager of the year. ”Did he say that?” Torborg said. ”Does he get a vote?”

Nope. The baseball writers do, but Torborg`s a virtual lock for the American League manager honors.

Tough time: After battling a groin injury recently, Ozzie Guillen played Wednesday with slight stiffness in his back, suffered when he lunged to make a tag on Tuesday night.

Remember when . . . : LaRussa will miss Comiskey Park, the place he got his start as a big-league manager.

”I spent a lot of time looking around in the ninth inning,” said LaRussa, who started with the Sox in 1979. ”You get sentimental at a time like this. I remembered `Bull` (Greg Luzinski) and Pudge (Carlton Fisk)

hitting home runs. There`s a lot of great memories.”
