When manager Jeff Torborg went to sleep Monday night, division-leading Oakland was trailing California by four runs. When he woke up Tuesday, he found out the A`s had rallied to tie in the ninth and win in the 10th. But it`s too early for scoreboard watching. Said Torborg: ”I find myself at times saying, `Don`t look at the board. This is the only game that matters.` I almost force myself not to look at the scoreboard.”
Go-Go Sox: Torborg, a devout believer in the running game, said before Tuesday`s game: ”Everyone in this lineup is prepared to bunt.” Carlton Fisk proved that when he tried to sneak a bunt past the Indians in the second inning. He was thrown out by pitcher Rod Nichols.
Sidelined: Scott Fletcher was a late scratch due to back spasms and was replaced by Steve Lyons at second for the second straight day.
Clown talk: Andrew Rozdilsky celebrated his 30th anniversary of performing at Comiskey Park. He`s better known as ”Andy the Clown” and has outlasted 14 Sox managers in his three decades.
Centerfold material: Dropping his drawers in Detroit has made Lyons such an instant legend that Playgirl magazine asked him if he would appear in a photo layout. ”We`re negotiating,” he said.
Attendance rise: Tuesday night`s crowd (37,095) enabled the Sox to exceed last year`s attendance total of 1,045,651, with 32 home dates left. Total to date: 1,061,311.
Ring, ring: Before the game, Sammy Sosa and Carlos Martinez were presented their 1989 Pacific Coast League championship rings by General Manager Larry Himes.

Trivia: Nolan Ryan goes for win No. 300 Wednesday night. Of the last nine pitchers to record 300 wins, five did it on their first try: Grover Alexander (1924), Warren Spahn (1961), Gaylord Perry (1982), Steve Carlton (1983) and Tom Seaver (1985 with the Sox).
