Here`s a primer on house music:

– House: Birthed primarily by underground black dance club deejays, house is mean, pounding dance music with a disco beat. But despite the similarities, house is actually a reaction against the slick, overproduced `70s disco sound. House started out as a small, homemade venture with deejays churning out mixes by reworking old classics or creating their own with drum machines, synthesizers and samplers, which electronically reproduce a voice or sound on any note of the scale.

– Ambient house: Latest thing in house spinoffs, which has been described as ”New Age house.” It`s a real contradiction in terminology when you consider that house music has a raw, pounding, hard-core disco beat and the New Age musical repertoire is pretty heavy on flutes, lutes and whale calls. Ambient house is house with a mellower melody.

– Deep house: Otherwise known as the old Philly Sound. It has a disco beat with slick production tracks produced by songwriters such as Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff of Philadelphia International records and artists such as Teddy Pendergrass and MFSB.

– Hip hop: Otherwise known as rap, where vocalists talk their way through songs that feature rhyming lyrics, street slang and a relentless beat.

– Hip house: A cross between house and hip hop. Music you can dance to.

– Rap house: Similar to hip house. It has a slower beat, making it harder to dance to.

– Acid house: House with all sorts of weird special sound effects.

– House parties: For the 17 and older crowd, there`s the regular 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sunday night dances at the Riviera Theatre, 4746 N. Broadway, where cover charges range from $8 to $12. For the really young hip housers, there`s an all-ages dance at Medusa, 3257 N. Sheffield Ave., every Saturday from 7 to 10:30 p.m.; 17 and older from 10:30 p.m. until 3 a.m. Cover is $7.
