Designer of the dramatic host station at the sophisticated Metropolis 1800, Sinoway`s creation has caught the eye and caused comment from ”at least a billion people,” teases Cathy Drechsler, who operates the chic restaurant at 1800 Clybourn Ave. with her chef-husband, Erwin.
The one-of-a-kind stand that greets diners is made of exotic amyris and quilted-maple woods and has ebony and sterling silver details. Designed especially for the restaurant, it is the most public example of Sinoway`s one- of-kind creations in wood and metal. Those materials are vastly different from the soft, natural fabrics he used to create the clever and appealing Jessica Trek children`s apparel several years ago.
”I feel I`m a pretty diverse person,” Sinoway says of his decision to devote his artistic efforts to furnishings and metal sculpture after closing Jessica Trek.
Some of his hefty bronze pots, which he prefers to call ”vessels,” are displayed at Manifesto, 200 W. Superior St. Lighter weight and for smaller budgets, he has designed a collection of whimsical weather vanes.
”I`m trying to do a timeless look, both in my furniture and the type of objects I choose to design,” Sinoway says. ”I also want them to have a sense of fun.”
