Being nouveau precocious must be tough. New York Woman magazine notes that the Calhoun School, evidently a discriminating academy of early education, interviewed a prospective applicant (age 3) and asked the mother:
”What kind of delivery did you have when you gave birth to your child?”
THE `JOKER` IS WILD Jack Nicholson, who isn`t known for a nurturing countenance, may want some lessons. At 52, he`s a father again. Companion Rebecca Broussard gave birth Monday in Los Angeles to a 7-pound 14-ounce daughter, Lorraine Broussard Nicholson. The actor`s other daughter, Jennifer Knight, is Broussard`s age, 26.
OH, HEATHCLIFF . . . If you missed Thursday`s kiss-and-tell on ”Prime Time Live,” here`s the romantic summary: Model Marla Maples indeed loves The Donald. ”I can`t lie about it. Oh, I do,” she confessed, admitting nonetheless that it ain`t got that ring, as in marriage. As for Maples` role as ”the other woman,” she said, ”I`m not the reason for that marriage having problems.” She called Ivana ”an absolutely beautiful woman.”

ARMY SHOOTS DOWN WOMEN The Army, which insists on testing military hardware, won`t test its softest software-namely, women-in combat conditions. Following up on accounts of women in combat in the Panama invasion, the Army has rejected a proposed four-year test of females in combat-related jobs. Said a statement released at the Pentagon: ”The Army does not feel that a test is warranted. We feel our current policy reflects the intent of Congress by excluding women from the highest risk of direct combat.”
NO MORE CLOSE ENCOUNTERS Ben Vereen got and gave in Los Angeles Superior Court. A judge ordered the actor to pay $7,500 to Christine Rich, who says he broke into her apartment and choked her. And Rich? She must return photos, letters, answering-machines tapes with his messages on them, and two Les Brown albums. Both were ordered to keep at least 100 yards apart.
A LAND OFFER FROM HOPE Remember that brouhaha in California involving Bob Hope`s virgin land and his luxury development plans? It may be over. Deferring to conservationists, Hope, 86, has agreed to transfer ownership of 5,700 acres of canyon countryside and wilderness in the Santa Monica Mountains to the state of California and the National Park Service for $20 million-less than half its estimated value. The deal still could collapse. It reportedly hinges on Hope`s petition to swap 59 acres with the National Park Service so he can proceed with a residential development planned near Agoura Hills-a proposal that many environmentalists still oppose.
FROM RAGS TO RICHES: A MODEL STORY OF ADOPTION Maybe clothes don`t make the boy, but they sure helped Larry Douglas, who found parents fashionably late.
Larry, at 9, was a foster child with no adoption prospects when he was asked to model in New Orleans` unusual spring fashion show featuring hard-to- place children and J.C. Penney`s threads. That`s how he clothed in on Emmie and Milton Douglas.
Was it love at first sight? Close enough. Seeing the couple in the audience, Larry took the direct approach: He asked, ”Y`all gonna be my mother and father?”
That was two years ago, recalled Dad. ”He just picked us out of the crowd. We don`t know how . . . but we`re glad it happened that way.”
Recalled Larry: ”I thought they were going to pick Nina or Jerry, but they came and picked me. I thought, `WOWWWWWW! I`ll finally be adopted!` I was happy.”
Penneys` program, now 8 years old and called ”very effective,” is endorsed by Louisiana`s Social Services Department.
