Chicago designer Dahlia had had ”enough with the rags.”

”I had just had it with those ripped, raggedy jeans we were all wearing this summer,” says the Jamaican-born designer, who is celebrating the first anniversary of her clothing shop (called Dahlia), 708 N. Wabash Ave. ”I decided I wanted a more tailored look and so I put the two things I like best together: leather and denim.”

The result is a pair of denim trousers with leather chaps.

”I had no idea there would be this kind of interest,” she says. ”At first I just made a pair for myself. Then Frank (Gross, Dahlia`s business manager) wanted a pair and then our regular customers started coming in and asking for them-both men and women. The jeans are kind of expensive, but for the people who can afford them, well, they come in here, try them on and think they`re in heaven.”

The pants cost $175 a pair and come in all sorts of leather and color combinations.

”The whole idea is to create this very urban look,” she says.
