– Elk Grove sectional-Eighty minutes of regulation play, 20 minutes of overtime and 40 penalty kicks were not enough to decide Saturday`s
championship game.
But Frank Lazarra was.
The Addison Trail senior scored both of his team`s goals in regulation, then fired a shot past Lake Park`s Jason Seger during the sudden-death round of penalty kicks.
Lazarra`s last goal lifted the Blazers (15-6-3) to a 3-2 victory and a berth in Tuesday night`s supersectional at Maine West against Palatine.
”It`ll take some time to sink in,” said Lazarra, who has 23 goals on the season. ”Right now, I`m exhausted.”
The 3 1/2-hour match finally ended when Blazer goalkeeper Chris Plos stopped Tom Czop on the 42d penalty kick of the day. Eleven times before, Lake Park had converted a penalty kick to stave off elimination.
”I`m calm, collected and dead,” said Addison Trail coach Joe Chapetta.
”I`ve never seen a game come close to this one.”
Czop scored twice within a three-minute span in the second period, giving the Lancers (14-9-2) a 2-1 lead. However, Lazarra scored on-what else?-a penalty kick midway through the third quarter.
