The St. Viator soccer team remembers.

On Sept. 20, the Lions beat Hoffman Estates 2-1 in a nonconference game with little at stake for either team. Saturday, the two staged a rematch, with a berth in the Elk Grove regional A title game on the line.

Spotting the host Hawks an early two-goal lead, St. Viator scored four unanswered markers of its own to stun Hoffman Estates 4-2.

With Ben Remer and Papo Gaunaurd scoring for Mid-Suburban League champion Hoffman Estates (13-6-1) before Saturday`s game was four minutes old, there seemed little doubt who would win. But, after Dan Edminster put St. Viator

(11-3-6) on the board with 6:26 left in the first half, Rory Dames tied the score five minutes into the third quarter and Eric Bender sent a direct free kick over the Hawks` wall before the fourth period was two minutes old to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. Chris Doherty`s penalty kick sealed the Hawks` fate.

”The game changed when Edminster scored our first goal,” said Lions coach Mike Taylor. ”He`s not left-footed, but he scored that way. That was what our players needed to get them going.”
