Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Cooler heads prevail: Head coach Phil Jackson`s practices, which often are closed to the media, are said to have a different tone than practices under former head coach Doug Collins.

”The attitude is great,” said Bulls forward Horace Grant. ”I`ve talked to some of the players when the coaches aren`t around, and they say, `You don`t have to worry about getting yelled at.` ”

”Everything is real relaxed and focused,” said center Bill Cartwright.

”Everything is positive, but now the games start.”

– Something`s cooking: Before the start of camp, Jackson hammered out something called his ”Prospectus on the 1989-90 season.”

In it he modestly sets the goals for the team (”We would like to be in the NBA Finals.”), but introduces a caveat: ”We need some seasoning.”

That`s a warning Jackson has been carrying through camp in a subtle attempt to temper expectations after last spring`s near-miracle finish.

When asked recently if the Bulls were ”jelling” as a team, he replied,

”I still think you have to throw some pectin in this one, because there is no jell yet.”

– Cool hand: In a single game when he was in high school, Bulls rookie point guard B.J. Armstrong made 26 of 27 free throws.
