What kind of a room impresses some of the Midwest`s leading interior designers? One answer is the two-story private library tucked in the offices of one of the city`s best-known printing companies.
More than 40 Midwestern interior designers who paid for pictures and descriptions of their work in a soon-to-be-published book saw the library during a ”press” party at the R.R. Donnelley & Sons plant.
The designers visited the library, a Gothic-style visual treat that houses about 5,000 books printed by the company since mid-1860s.
After a Donnelley official pointed out the room`s Ohio sandstone walls, hand-carved English oak doors and bookshelves and the floor of Indian teakwood and Italian marble, designer Diane Wendell of Downers Grove asked the question, ”Who was the interior designer?”
”We don`t know,” the company official admitted, an answer many guests shuddered to hear. ”Howard Shaw was the architect of the building. (Founder) R.R. Donnelley almost certainly was involved.”

Presumably such a fate will not befall those who participated in
”Showcase of Interior Design.” Aimed at private and corporate consumers shopping for a designer but unwilling to rely solely on word-of-mouth cocktail circuit recommendations, the publication (Vitae Publishing, $36) is scheduled to be off the presses in November and in stores such as Rizzoli and Stuart Brent.
