It was not a good week for the Downers Grove South football team-until it beat host Hinsdale Central 29-6 Saturday, that is.

First the Mustangs had to recover from a 14-0 season-opening loss to Naperville Central. Then illness hit the team during the week. And on Friday, Kenny Holland, a former multi-sport standout at Downers South who was about to start his sophomore year at DePauw University, died from injuries he incurred in a car crash recently.

”It was a tough week,” said Downers Grove coach John Belskis, who won his first game as head coach. ”We had a lot of kids out sick. And everyone was upset by the Kenny Holland situation. We didn`t dedicate the game to him, but we knew he would want us to go out and play our best. It`s tough for our kids to put that kind of thing out of their minds.”

The Mustangs rolled up 201 yards in the first half Saturday while limiting Hinsdale to 23. Downers South led 22-0 at halftime on two touchdown passes by quarterback Kevin Platt, for 23 yards to Shelly Mathew and 19 yards to Jeff Myczek, and on a 1-yard run by Steve Lucado on the last play of the first half.
