The English like cricket, but Kevin Gerrasch of Libertyville proved Monday that there is nothing quite like an American football fan.

Gerrasch, 22, a ballboy for the Cleveland Browns, was not invited to accompany the Browns to London next week for their Aug. 5 exhibition against the Philadelphia Eagles.

But a Cleveland radio station sponsored a contest that won Gerrasch a free trip. WPHR, 107.9 on the dial, awarded a trip to the contestant who would do something crazy.

Gerrasch, who is transferring to Cleveland State University this fall, ate 107.9 live crickets.

”I bit one in half,” Gerrasch said.

”I figured if I ate something disgusting, and ate that many of them, I`d win. I started off eating one at a time, then 10-11 at a time.”

He didn`t practice.

”Only in small amounts. I`d occasionally pick one off the ground,” he said. ”The guy in the pet store said they had a lot of protein. Good for you. He sold them for frog food.”

Gerrasch didn`t croak. He showed up in time for practice Monday and drank Gatorade.
