player ready...When Doug Atkins travelled from Hamilton, Ohio, to Chicago last weekend, he toted along 50 copies of the Dowd Report, Major League Baseball`s look into the alleged gambling activities of Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose.
The enterprising Atkins, owner of a sports memorabilia shop, found the report to be a fairly brisk seller at the 10th National Sports Collectors Convention held here.
Atkins sold copies of the 225-page report for $15 to dealers at the show, and for $25 to the public. With a record 37,000 attending promoter Bruce Paynter`s four-day show, which ended Sunday, Atkins had plenty of customers.
”It`s a matter of public record,” said Atkins. ”I had to take time to get it, so why not come here and sell it? It`s going well at our store back home and we`ve told people they can get it from us through the mail. We`re getting phone calls for orders and sending them out UPS because people want them quick. . . .
”We`re just trying to make a few bucks,” he added. ”We`re kind of a middleman. I have receipts from the printing guy who told me it was legal to sell them. I`m going to try to call a copyright lawyer to be sure. I don`t want to get in trouble.”
Said Atkins` son, Daniel: ”We sold 30 in our store the day it came out. They were selling around the courthouse for $50 apiece and people were buying them like crazy. I think it will continue to be a good seller.”
