Our Flick of the Week, as we await a screening of ”Ghostbusters II”

(which opens on Friday), is ”Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.” Sequels reveal the movie business as truly a business.

As for ”Star Trek V,” this latest chapter is an embarrassment, easily the worst film in the series. It offers nothing new in special effects and its story looks as though it were edited with a chainsaw. A standard space fight with the Klingons is intercut with a story involving Spock`s Vulcan half-brother.

William Shatner directs his first feature film, and it shows. There is absolutely nothing visually remarkable about ”Star Trek V.” The opening and closing scene of the film is a campfire roundelay of Captain Kirk, Bones and Spock, who spend a lot of time tossing down drinks.

”Star Trek V” is playing at the Burnham Plaza, 900 North Michigan, Webster Place and outlying theaters. Rated PG-13. (STAR) 1/2

New this week

– LITTLE VERA (Music Box). A modest Russian domestic drama that achieved notoriety because of the Playboy photographs of its female star. This is the standard story of a plucky young woman throwing off the chains of sexual oppression and an alcohol-influenced family. If it had been made in America, it would be nothing special. Not rated. (STAR)(STAR) 1/2
