Steeleye Span
Portfolio (Shanachie) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Along with Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span helped put folk rock on the musical map. ”Portfolio” covers the band`s 20-year career and includes some of their best material: ”Dark Eyed Sailor,” ”Alison Gross,” ”Thomas the Rhymer,” ”Long Lankin” and ”Gaudete.” In trying to create a contemporary equivalent to the old English ballads, they sometimes reached too far-adding intrusive electric guitar, for example, -yet there`s no denying the durability of the band`s appeal. Maddy Prior`s angelic vocals still soar and the rich harmonies still send a chill.
