It can take as long as six months for Ani Afshar to weave one of her magnificent blankets of silk, wool, glass beads and Mylar thread, which has a shimmery effect. The blankets, wall hangings and shawls she weaves obviously are a labor of love, ranging in price from $1,700 to $3,500. They have been recognized as works of art and are beginning to be collected by those captivated by their beauty.
”My weavings kind of tell the story of my life,” said Afshar, who also creates one-of-a-kind jewelry. ”They come out of my feelings.” Born in Turkey, raised and educated in Switzerland, and having lived in the Middle East, Afshar`s work naturally is touched by those diverse influences.

”A lot of people try to translate my work into what they`re used to thinking of: a flower, whatever,” said Afshar. ”But it`s none of those things. It`s just how I feel at the moment.”
An exhibition of Afshar`s recent work is being held through June 21 at the Evanston Art Center. There will be an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. today. Call 475-5300 for more information.
