When Stephen and Victoria (Tory) Pavlovic began to design a nursery for their son, Dwight, now 9 months old, they were disappointed in their search for images to decorate the walls.
”The imagery often is flat and repetitive,” Tory said. ”It`s not really geared to what kids would like but what adults would like.”
So Dad, an artist whose work ranges from classical drawing to abstract expressionism, created a fantasy that some have likened to a Maurice Sendak adventure. It was a vividly colored menagerie of animals, flowers and plants in very bright colors. Dwight loved it.
He was not alone. Dad`s art suddenly is in demand, and the Pavlovics recently relocated from Morganton, W.Va., to Chicago because of a number of commissions ranging from private nurseries to a waiting room at Wyler`s Children`s Hospital at the University of Chicago, which is scheduled to be completed in the fall.
”I try to interject an element of whimsy in my work-fish floating over landscapes, musical notes dancing out of bird beaks.”
Pavlovic is exhibiting 17 canvases particularly geared to children-horses, penguins on ice cubes, vegetables, kitties, whales, elephants.
The show, entitled ”Fine Art for Children,” runs through May 4 at the Coresi Gallery in Suburban Fine Arts Center, 777 Central Ave., Highland Park.
