If he`s really a two-time father, Steve Garvey says he`ll do the right thing. Detroit Mayor Coleman Young denies he`s a dad, but he`s consenting to a blood test nonetheless. And William Hurt? Well, he`s paid all along for a 5-year-old boy. But now Sandra Jennings wants more. Complaining of

impoverishment despite Hurt`s annual $60,000 payments, Jenning`s legal mercenary is demanding ”equitable distribution” of the actor`s assets-estimated at $10 million. The lawyer said Jennings, an ex-ballet dancer, and Hurt cohabitated in Beaufort, S.C., during filming of ”The Big Chill” in 1982. Two weeks ago, Hurt married Heidi Henderson, daughter of band leader Skitch Henderson.

CHEERS: FATHER KNEW BEST Paternity was a burning nonissue with Shelley Long. When she and Bruce Tyson married, actress Long was so career-oriented that fatherhood, along with motherhood and, of course, children, were a no-no. ”It was the source of one of our first big arguments,” Long told McCall`s magazine. ”I said, `Look, I`ve wanted to have a career all my life. And now that it`s taken off, I`m not going to give it up to have a baby.` ” The couple made a contract to keep it on the back burner. ”I don`t think Bruce ever kept his part of the deal. But you know what? I`m really glad he didn`t. Juliana-she`s the very best,” said Long of her 4-year-old daughter.

HOFFMAN`S DAD IN A COMA Actor Dustin Hoffman has postponed his London stage debut in ”The Merchant of Venice” to be with his father, Harry, 81, who is in a coma following a stroke two weeks ago in California. ”He is taking things day by day at the moment. We do not know what is going to happen next,” said family spokesman Lee Gottsegen.

GUMBEL KISSES AGAIN Having possibly learned a lesson in humility, Bryant Gumbel is mending fences with David Letterman as well as Willard Scott. Gumbel thanked Letterman for not exacerbating his troubles with ”Today” colleagues. Seems that Letterman, along with Newsday, had received a copy of that infamous memo to NBC execs, but he quietly sent it to Gumbel. Four years ago, Letterman`s propensity for mischief frosted B.G. during a ”Today” show taping at the Rockefeller Center skating rink, when, armed with a bullhorn, he chanted from an upper office, ”I am Larry Grossman, president of NBC News . . . and I`m not wearing any pants!” (Hmmmmn. Might Letterman`s prank actually have been a harbinger about the hazards of peacock pride when one`s pants are down?)

YES, CHICO HAS CHEEK It may take awhile, but Jonathon ”Chico” DeBarge eventually will figure out what went wrong. A rising pop-funk singer, DeBarge, 22, asked federal Judge Richard Enslen in Kalamazoo, Mich., to read his press clippings before imposing a prison sentence for cocaine dealing. Oops, among all those rosy features was one detailing DeBarge`s stern speech to junior high students about remaining as pure as the driven snow. Indeed, it was delivered a month before his arrest with 2.2 pounds of cocaine. Muttering angrily about

”hypocrisy,” Enslen said Motown`s self-shooting star should consider the kind of snow he thinks is coolest. Take your time, suggested the judge-like the next 5 years. Next case.

FCC TO S.F.: STOP COMPLAINING Put this one under the heading of ”I`m from the government and I`m here to help you”: Automatic garage-door openers in the San Francisco area suddenly are useless because of mysterious radio signals emanating from nearby Mt. Diablo. A government agency is responsible for the mystery, but folks at the Federal Communications Commission won`t say which agency. Moreover, they`re hardly leaping to the rescue. Said FCC spokesman Tom Hora, suggesting that garage owners manually bend their shoulders to the task: ”We`re not obligated to do anything.”
