Reggie Ward sank two free throws with 2 minutes 35 seconds left to break a 55-55 deadlock, and ninth-ranked Thornridge (13-3) held on to edge No. 17 New Trier 62-60 in a nonconference game Saturday night in Winnetka.

New Trier (10-4) closed to within 57-56, but Jonathan Boyles and Townsend Orr scored to give the Falcons a 61-56 advantage with 30 seconds left.

Dobbins hit a free throw and a three-point shot to pull the Trevians to within 61-60 with 10 seconds remaining. Derrick Dennis` free throw gave Thornridge its final margin of victory.

For Thornridge, Frank McDaniel had 9 points and 4 rebounds, Pattrick Porter added 9 points and Boyles 7. Orr was limited to just 5. Dobbins had 13 points and Scott Clayborne 12 for New Trier.

Thornridge coach Mike Flaherty benched starter Robert McDonald for the entire second half after McDonald had scored 13 points. ”It`s part of the competition of the team,” Flaherty explained. ”I don`t want anybody to get too complacent on this team.”

East Aurora 77, De Kalb 57-Tyrone Savage scored 28 points and Thomas Wyatt added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots to lead the No. 5 Tomcats (11-2, 4-1) in the Upstate Eight. Stu Brandon had 13 points for De Kalb (8-6, 1-3). East went on a 13-0 spree in the first quarter to take a 16-5 lead and built it as high as 22 points in the fourth quarter. The Tomcats outrebounded De Kalb 38-16.

Evanston 74, Gary (Ind.) Wallace 63-Seventh-ranked Evanston (12-2) led 35-24 at the half and never let up on their Hoosier visitors. Tyrone Bell had 21 points and Juvon McGarry 20 for the Wildkits. Antoine Smith had 21 for Wallace.

Leo 72, Prosser 48-James Thomas scored 18 points and DeWaun Rose added 17 to lift No. 13 Leo (11-2) over Prosser of the Public League.

Leyden 49, Proviso East 46-Leroy Davis had 11 points and a key blocked shot with :10 left to lead Leyden (7-6, 3-1) to the West Suburban Gold upset over Proviso East (10-4, 3-1) in Franklin Park. Leyden scored all nine of its fourth-quarter points on free throws. It scored just one point (with :25 left) in the last 5:15 as the score went from 48-38 to 49-46. Proviso, which scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, had 21 turnovers to 12 for Leyden. The Pirates` Don Boyce missed a 5-footer with :30 left that would have tied the game at 48. ”We played super defense,” said Leyden coach Norm Goodman. ”We beat a very good team. It proves we can play against anybody.”

West Aurora 97, Streamwood 60-David Bacon scored 27 points, Mario Clark added 18 and Bill Taylor 15 as No. 19 West Aurora (12-3, 5-0) remained atop the Upstate Eight.

Rolling Meadows 90, Waukegan East 43-Mike Lipnisky had 22 points and Aaron Williams 17 for No. 20 Rolling Meadows (11-3).

Fenwick 63, Joliet Catholic 55-Art Walker had 29 points and Ed Gad 16 as Fenwick (13-2) built a 27-24 halftime lead and coasted. Mike Meyer had 25 for Joliet Catholic (6-9).

Libertyville 96, Stevenson 63-Todd Adams scored 36 points and Shawn Stanek 18 for Libertyville (8-5, 3-3) in the North Suburban. Cleveland Tyson led Stevenson with 15 points.

Zion-Benton 62, Fenton 51-Desmond Hunt had 16 points, John Anderson 15, Gary Scott 12 and Clayton Myles 10 as Zion-Benton (10-3, 5-1) rolled in the North Suburban. Fred Warren had 13 and Nick Marshall 11 for Fenton (9-7, 3-3). Lyons Township 70, Hinsdale Central 41-Rich Mercer had 20 points, John Hornacek 15, Kenny Williams 11 and Tom Skahill 10 to lift Lyons (6-8, 1-3) in the West Suburban Silver.

Nazareth Academy 49, Timothy Christian 47 (OT)-Sean Pearson had 15 points as Nazareth (9-4, 5-2) rallied past Timothy in the Private League. Randy Hoekstra had 18 and Kevin Post 17 for Timothy (2-13, 0-7).

Walther Lutheran 52, Luther North 40-Andrew Amaya scored 21 points as Walther Lutheran (13-3, 6-0) remained unbeaten in the Private School League.

Benet Academy 65, Naperville North 56-Matt Conrad (16 points) and Dennis Krob (13 points) led Benet (7-6) in the nonconference game. Jay Resnik had 11 points, including three three-pointers, for Naperville (6-7).

Elgin 68, Lake Park 35-The Maroons (8-6, 4-1) took a 39-13 halftime lead and coasted in the Upstate Eight.

St. Charles 80, Larkin 64-J.P. Brens had 18 points and Mark Muldowny 12 to lift St. Charles (12-3, 3-2) in the Upstate Eight. Fred Bersluys had 21 for Larkin (6-8, 2-3).

Montini 64, Westmont 47-Bob Starvel (17 points) and Rich Starmann (14)

powered Montini`s (8-6) nonconference victory.

Aurora Central 84, Wheaton Christian 80-Joe Stewart poured in 37 points and Chuck Meredith added 20 for Aurora Central (5-8, 3-3) in the Private League. Andy Schmidt and Chris Bonga had 17 apiece for Wheaton Christian

(0-12, 0-5).

Downers Grove South 67, Morton 57-Tim McGladdery and Duane Anderson each had 16 points and Brian Buscherr and Jason Foote had 14 apiece to spark Downers South (5-8, 1-3) in the West Suburban Gold.

Waubonsie Valley 51, West Chicago 50-Steve Keller had 14 points, including the game-winning free throw with :04 left for Waubonsie Valley

(12-1).

Thornton 98, Glenbrook South 59-Rebounding from Friday night`s SICA East loss to Thornridge, fourth-ranked Thornton (12-2) rolled to a 38-25 halftime lead and coasted past Glenbrook South (6-8). Louis Ely popped in 24 points, Tracy Webster 23. Maurice Stovall added 13 points before leaving the game with a sprained ankle with 4:09 left in the first half. He should be back in action next week. Frank Perkins had 19 and Dan Taylor 12 for Glenbrook South.

St. Viator 52, Dundee-Crown 42-George Dilles scored 16 points as St. Viator (9-5) won in nonconference play. Dundee-Crown`s Donn Mendoza led all scorers with 22.

Marian Catholic 66, University High 39-Rob Ross (12 points) and Tony Dolci (11) led Marian Catholic (5-9) to the nonconference victory.

Antioch 57, North Chicago 48-Scott Gooch poured in 27 points and Matt Pelland added 10 points and 19 rebounds as Antioch (6-8, 3-3) beat North Chicago in the North Suburban Conference.

Holy Trinity 64, St. Benedict 63-Kevin Seabrook sank the front end of a 1-and-1 with 5 seconds remaining to give Holy Trinity (8-4, 3-0) its winning edge in the first-place showdown in the Chicagoland Prep Conference. St. Benedict (6-6, 2-1) led at all the quarter stops (16-14 after the first, 36-35 at the half and 58-55 at the end of three). Its three-point advantage entering the fourth quarter was one of the biggest leads either team could fashion in the thriller that had an overflow audience cheering wildly. After squandering its third-quarter lead, St. Benedict battled back to gain a 63-63 tie on a basket by Ralph Davis with 1:40 left.

DeAndre Louis had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Seabrook finished with 19 points and Elvin Butler added 16 for Holy Trinity. Davis had 19, Devidian Smith 16 and Steven Banks 12 for St. Benedict.

Quigley South 80, St. Gregory 58-Brandon Bradford (19 points, 11 rebounds), Asa Stovall (17 points, 14 rebounds) and David Allen (15 points, 9 assists) led the assault as Quigley South (5-8, 3-1) remained in the Chicagoland Prep title hunt. Marvin Wrigley scored 19 for St. Gregory (2-11, 1-3).

Providence-St. Mel 64, Hales Franciscan 55-Kelly Martin (13 points), David Jones (11) and Willie Hunt (10) combined to lead St. Mel to the nonconference decision.

Illiana Christian 56, Chicago Christian 47-Thomas Clark (18 points), Rob Oppenhuis (14) and Matt Huisman (13) led Illiana (8-6, 3-3) in the Private League.

Bloom Trail 79, Champaign Centennial-John Davis (20 points), Brandon Johnson (16 points, 9 rebounds) and Steve Henley (12 points, 9 assists, 9 rebounds) paced Bloom Trail (10-4). Jason Carrodine led Champaign Centennial with 17 points.

Carmel 73, Weber 63-Tyrone Tate scored 40 points in a losing cause for Weber (4-10).
