Sting owner Lee Stern met with Loop attorney Joe Vitell at halftime of Saturday`s game to discuss the check for 5 cents that Vitell sent him Friday morning after Stern offered to sell the club for a nickel.

Stern grabbed Vitell`s arm and said, ”I don`t want to let you get away.” He said the pair will meet next week to discuss a possible sale. Both men agreed it would be for more than a nickel.

”I have no idea if he`s serious,” Stern said, ”but I absolutely want to listen.”

Said Vitell: ”I wouldn`t mind being involved in some way. I`m serious about this. At the very least, I hope what I`m doing helps him. I`d need other investors. I`ve had calls from three other people already.”

Sting partner Lou Weisbach was irked at Stern`s remarks in The Tribune that Weisbach has lost more than $1 million this season and probably wouldn`t want to exercise an option to buy the team from Stern.

”Lee`s comments lately are totally erroneous, particularly in terms of any losses I`ve had,” Weisbach said. ”I`m not a lone investor. His comments are inaccurate and grossly overstated.”

It was learned that Jeff Cagan of Cagan`s Realty in Skokie is the silent partner Stern and Weisbach have alluded to this season. Cagan couldn`t be reached for comment.
