Midwestern female college students are the most sexually active in the country, a national survey by Glamour magazine found. One in 3 Midwestern college women has sex more than twice a month, the survey of 1,200 male and female students in 80 colleges revealed.

Eastern coeds were second, with 31 percent reporting sexual encounters more than twice a month, followed by Western college women (28 percent) and Southern college women (21) percent.

Women at private colleges tended to be more active than those at public schools, the study showed: 34 percent of private school coeds made love more than twice a month, compared to 28 percent of those from public colleges. But the majority of women at religiously affiliated colleges and all-women`s schools were celibate.

Men show an opposite trend. Forty-four percent of public college men responding had sex more than twice a month, while just 29 percent of private school men did.

Although the study found fewer celibate coeds than a similar survey in 1980, collectively the sex drive of college students apparently has abated. In 1980, 39 percent of men and women questioned said they had sexual relations more than twice a month. In 1987 only 32 percent said they did.

One in 4 college students wish they could have sex more often, the survey showed. However, that, too, represents a decline from 1980, when 31 percent of those responding wished to be more sexually active.

Conversely, levels of satisfaction increased. In 1980, 2 of 3 college students felt their sex lives were ”about right.” In 1987, about 3 in 4 did. TEAM PLAYERS

When male executives reach an impasse in negotiating labor contracts or corporate mergers, they might consider deferring to their female secretaries. Women may be better team players than men. After reviewing 52 studies of problem solving, sharing and helping conducted between 1961 and 1983, Wendy Wood, a psychologist at Texas A&M University, concluded that all-women groups outperformed all-male groups 60 percent of the time.

The female groups were friendlier to one another, but more important, they were more willing to compromise.

The difference may owe to women`s positions within the power structure, Wood speculates. Traditionally stuck in lower-level jobs, women depend more on diplomacy to get by. Not so men, many of whom hold positions that allow no one to challenge their decisions.

AUTO MANIC

The Associated Press reports that on the average, an American man spends 71 minutes a day riding in his car, an American woman 54 minutes and an American child 33 minutes.
