player ready...This week`s heckler didn`t wait until after the game to get on coach Mike Ditka`s case.
After the Bears failed on two quarterback sneaks before halftime, Ditka encountered what he said were ”a bunch of hecklers in the stands,” whom he greeted with an obscene gesture.
Ditka and quarterback Jim McMahon thought the Bears scored on the third-down sneak. On fourth down, all 11 Vikings appeared to hit McMahon at the snap.
”I`ll still call it and I`ll call it again and I`ll call it again,”
Ditka said. ”If I don`t, Mr. Halas will roll over in his grave.”
The late Bears` owner George Halas drew up the quarterback sneak for Ditka after Ditka`s first game as coach in 1982, and Ditka vowed to use it every time he needs a few inches.
”If you can`t make 6 inches, you don`t deserve them,” he said.
In the second half, McMahon threw a 25-yard pass into the end zone incomplete on a third and inches.
”We called a quarterback sneak and he thought we said, `Quarterback pass,` ” Ditka explained.
As for his third confrontation with hecklers in as many weeks, Ditka said:
”I don`t like `em. I don`t like know-it-alls in life. . . . We appreciate his 18 bucks.”
