Buick Open–Life as a pro golfer has been hard for Billy Pierot, but something good finally happened. Pierot and Davis Love III, both PGA Tour rookies, shot 7-under 65s to share the first-round lead in Grand Blanc, Mich. ”I tried seven or eight times to qualify for the tour,” said Pierot, 30, a golfing vagabond who played in Europe and Asia for four years before joining the Tournament Players Association circuit two years ago.

”There are a lot of guys like me who are hoping to break out,” Pierot said. ”The really good players don`t care who`s leading in the first round. They`ll wait for guys like me to make the mistakes.”

Du Maurier Classic–Chris Johnson shot a 5-under-par 67 in Woodbridge, Canada, to take a two-stroke lead over JoAnne Carner after the first round of the last of the LPGA`s Grand Slam events for 1986.
