Forty years ago today, American bombers dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing and maiming thousands of people. At 7 p.m. Tuesday WTTW-Ch. 11 will present ”Hiroshima Remembered,” a three-hour special.

Same-day satellite coverage of ceremonies in Hiroshima will be included as well as two award-winning films. ”The Day After Trinity: J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb” documents the making of the A-bomb and follows physicist Oppenheimer`s fall from fame after the bomb was dropped. The other film, ”Hiroshima: The People`s Legacy,” looks at how the bomb affected the Hiroshima survivors. The second film was produced by the Japanese Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) and has never been aired on American television.
