More Delights

Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones (Galaxy)

It`s quite possible that the very worst recording engineer ever to get his hands on a group of jazz musicians is Baker Bigsby, the man responsible for ruining a lot of sessions for the Galaxy and Fantasy labels recently.

Recorded in 1978, ”More Delights” is a follow-up to Flanagan and Jones` first duo-piano album, ”Our Delights,” but this one is an equally painful experience. The two pianists play with typical elegance and flair, but Bigsby takes two of the most sound-conscious artists and distorts their music unmercifully.

Jones, in particular, sounds like he`s playing an instrument that has thumbtacks embedded in its felt hammers; and Flanagan`s subtle touch is brutalized, too. One could, I suppose, listen through all this and find the music that lies underneath; but the aural crimes that Bigsby commits here are unforgivable.
