It sounded like a good idea: a TV series inspired by Clifton Webb`s charmingly funny performance as an unflappable babysitter named Lynn Belvedere in ”Sitting Pretty” (1948). Webb`s Belvedere went on to further adventures in ”Mr. Belvedere Goes to College” (1949) and ”Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell” (1951). On March 15, ABC launched their version of ”Mr. Belvedere,” a half-hour sitcom starring Christopher Hewett.
The show, at 7:30 p.m. Fridays on ABC-Ch. 7, is still trying to find its niche. Among an average of 66 shows, it`s in 30th place. Hewett`s no Clifton Webb, but he has his moments as housekeeper and babysitter to three kids, ages 8 to 16.
The head of the family is George Owens, played by Bob Uecker, a former major league baseball player and Milwaukee Brewers` announcer. Owens is a Pittsburgh sports reporter. His wife, Marsha (played by Ilene Graff), is studying to become a lawyer.
