The Bob Hope Desert Classic kicks off the golf season–it`s actually more of a celebrity pro-am than a real tournament (but it`s nice to see the sun)– at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on WMAQ-TV (Channel 5). And the top men tennis players start their year in the Volvo Masters, whose final two rounds Saturday and Sunday also are on WMAQ-TV (Channel 5) at 11:30 a.m. In between, there`s enough basketball to keep those eyeballs bouncing. Saturday`s best:
Washington against Duke at 11 a.m. on WBBM-TV (Channel 2) followed by Houston at De Paul, North Carolina at Virginia at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN (cable) and Michigan State at Illinois at 1 p.m. on SportsVision (cable). Sunday`s best:
Southern Methodist at North Carolina at 1:30 p.m. on WBBM-TV (Channel 2). Saturday`s worst: Northwestern at Ohio State, 8 p.m. on WFBN-TV (Channel 66).
