Heavy snow buildup is believed to have caused the collapse of a gas station canopy in Des Plaines early Monday morning.

The canopy outside the Mobil Station at the southwest corner of Potter and Ballard Roads collapsed into a pile of twisted metal shortly after midnight, Feb. 22, said Raj Shah, manager of the station and the 7-Eleven convenience store on the property.

No customers or cars were under the canopy when it fell, Shah said.

Days of snowfall piling up on top of the structure likely caused it to fall, he said. Shah added that he is hopeful the debris will be removed and the gas pumps operational again within a few days.

According to news reports, a similar canopy collapse, also at a Mobil gas station, occurred Feb. 19 along Harlem Avenue in Elmwood Park.

In Morton Grove, snow was blamed for a roof collapse at the Glen Grove Equestrian Center on Feb. 16.
