The City of Evanston had another resignation this week as 2nd Ward Councilmember Peter Braithwaite announced his resignation at a recent city council meeting. He follows Interim City Manager Kelley Gandurski who also announced her resignation on Tuesday.
Braithwaite has served on city council for over a decade after being appointed by former Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl in 2011.
“It has been a huge honor and privilege not only to serve and represent the members of the 2nd Ward here on council but being a part of some amazing decisions and meeting some incredible people along the way,” said Braithwaite during the meeting.
In a news release from the city, Braithwaite said that the recent passing of his mother has given him time to reflect and reevaluate his priorities.
4th Ward Councilmember Jonathan Nieuwsma thanked Braithwaite for his service saying he was taken aback by the announcement and is sorry to see him go. 7th Ward Councilmember Eleanor Revelle followed, saying how she will miss Braithwaite on council.
8th Ward Councilmember Devon Reid said that while he and Braithwaite disagreed on issues, he appreciates the lessons he learned from him and his role outside of council as a mentor.
“If you ask me about my legacy, I think that’s going to be your legacy,” said Reid.
During his time on council, Braithwaite served as chair of the Reparations Committee, Minority, Women, Evanston Based Enterprise Committee and the Alternatives to Arrest Committee.
He was also a member of the Administration and Public Works Committee, Human Services Committee, Rules Committee and the City-School Liaison Committee.
Mayor Daniel Biss highlighted in the release Braithwaite’s dedication to the Black community in Evanston and his love of the city.
“Whatever you want to say about this council, experience is not our forte. And you’ve brought experience you’ve been so generous in sharing what you’ve learned during your time on this council with those of us who are new,” said Biss. “That’s meant a lot and it’s going to be really really be felt after July 11.”
