Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain won a new term Tuesday, defeating Councilman Corey Dixon by a sizable margin.

Kaptain headed into his fourth term with 56.16% of the vote to Dixon’s 42.20% with all precincts in Kane and Cook counties reporting.

All votes are unofficial because some provisional ballots and mail-in ballots postmarked for Tuesday but arriving after Election Day will be added to the totals. Final results are to be certified April 18.

Kaptain, a retired chemist with the Fox River Water Reclamation District, was elected to the city council in 2005 and to his first term as mayor six years later. He touted his steady leadership and experience in water and wastewater during the campaign.

Dixon, an administrator with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, was elected to the council in 2017 and won reelection four years later. He said were he elected, he had a vision for how he could improve the city and wanted to focus on economic development.

Both agreed the biggest issues facing the city are continuing to replace lead water service lines, infrastructure, redevelopment and making sure Elgin is financially stable.
