Halloween trick-or treating hours for Sunday, Oct. 31, have been set for Elgin and neighboring communities. They are:

Elgin: 4-7 p.m.

Carpentersville: 3-7 p.m.

East Dundee: 3-7 p.m.

Sleepy Hollow: 3-7 p.m.

South Elgin: 3-6 p.m.

West Dundee: 3-7 p.m.

Centers for Disease Control said trick-or-treating should be safe for those distributing candy and those collecting it as long as everyone wears masks. It’s recommended that direct contact with trick-or-treaters be avoided by either distributing items outside or setting up a station from which children can take treats.

The Elgin Police Department issued these safety recommendations for the holiday:

Practice COVID-19 safety precautions like wearing a mask, social distancing and limiting group size.

Practice good hygiene like washing your hands and avoid touching your face.

Young children should be accompanied by their parents or another responsible adult.

One member of each group should carry a lighted flashlight, at dusk or afterwards.

Make sure costumes do not limit mobility and have no visibility obstructions.

Children should be dressed in light-colored costumes.

Always walk on the sidewalk and cross the street at intersections.

Bring candy and goodies home and have parents check them before eating any of them.

Residents who want trick-or-treaters to visit should keep porch and exterior lights on during trick-or-treating hours and should only serve wrapped candy, the police departments says. They’re also reminding people to lock their garage and car doors to prevent vandalism and theft and to watch out for costumed children while driving.
