Two Lansing residents are charged with murder in the April 26 shooting of two people in Matteson, including an 18-year-old Justice woman who died at a local hospital.
Matteson police said that 21-year-old Jamaine Rush and 20-year-old India Williams are both charged with first-degree murder in the shootings at an address in the 3700 block of 214th Place.
There, police found a 21-year-old man in front of the home with a gunshot wound to the leg and, inside a vehicle, an 18-year-old woman who appeared to have several gunshot wounds, according to Matteson police.
Police said they were sent to the home shortly before 10 p.m. April 26 for a report of shots fired.
Officers applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to police.
The woman was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital, where she later died.
She was identified as Kyla Precious Ankum, of the 8300 block of South 88th Avenue in Justice, by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Ankum was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. April 26 at Franciscan. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the office.
Cook County sheriff records show Rush and Williams were booked into jail Saturday and are next due to appear Tuesday at the Markham courthouse.
Matteson police said Monday the arrests and charges came following a “thorough and lengthy” investigation that had initially determined the shootings to be an isolated occurrence.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force assisted in the investigation, according to Matteson police.
