Former “American Idol” contestant Haley Reinhart was found guilty Monday of striking a bouncer during an altercation last year at a Palatine bar.
Reinhart took the witness stand in her own defense during the 90-minute trial in Cook County. But Judge James Karahalios called her testimony “evasive, argumentative and sometimes implausible” as he found her guilty of violating a local ordinance prohibiting battery.
Reinhart “really hauled off and punched him,” the judge said, based on surveillance video of the incident. She denied hitting the bartender in the eye, but under questioning from the village prosecutor said she might have made contact with him accidentally but didn’t recall doing so.
A bartender from the Lamplighter Inn Tavern & Grille is awaiting trial on a criminal battery charge stemming from the same melee at the bar last July.
Adam Sobanski is accused of putting a patron who was with Reinhart’s party that night in a headlock and choking him as bouncers were trying to escort Reinhart out of the bar.
That man, Alan Chislof, has also filed suit against Sobanski and the Lamplighter.
After Monday’s hearing in Rolling Meadows, Reinhart, who is from Wheeling but now lives in Los Angeles, said of the case: “This is a very unfortunate circumstance. There was no bad intention on my part.”
She said she’s “not a trouble starter.”
The incident took place early July 8. During Monday’s hearing, prosecutor James Etchingham said Reinhart was “acting aggressive and intoxicated,” but Reinhart said she had had only two drinks and was not intoxicated. She said the incident started when one of her girlfriends bumped into a marker keeping people away from the stage and that suddenly she was grabbed from behind and escorted from the establishment.
The bouncer testified that Reinhart and her friends were being loud and unruly. When another employee on the stage pointed at Reinhart and said, “She has to go,” the bouncer began to escort her toward the exit. He said he was behind her, and she continued to turn and use profanity and made an obscene gesture. She then struck him in his midsection with her right hand and he grabbed her right wrist, he testified.
“I told her, ‘You’re not allowed to strike bouncers,’ ” he said.
He testified that he led her to the entrance vestibule and that she was able to free her wrist. She then turned and punched him in the left eye, he said.
Reinhart testified the bouncer had her pinned against a railing during the fracas. She said he was hurting her wrist and that she suffered bruising to her arm. Her attorney, Carmine Trombetta, introduced photos of a bruised arm that he said were caused during the scuffle. The pictures were taken by Reinhart with her cellphone shortly after the incident.
Asked if she directed profanities at the bouncers that night, Reinhart said she didn’t recall. The judge said he didn’t accept that answer and said the testimony of the bouncer was more believable.
The bouncer said he had a slight bruise around his eye for a day but was otherwise uninjured.
Reinhart denied that she struck the bouncer, but under continued questioning by Etchingham and the judge, she admitted that it was possible her “hand made contact” with the bouncer’s face.
After the verdict, Trombetta said Reinhart had no intent to strike the bouncer and that any contact was purely unintentional.
“It was total chaos,” said Trombetta. “Bouncers were screaming and yelling at her. There was another commotion and all hell broke loose.”
Reinhart, who placed third on the talent show in 2011, must pay about $650 in fines and court costs. Karahalios agreed to strike the conviction from her record if she has no run-ins with the law in the next two years.
Karahalios gave some advice to Reinhart, including that she should patronize a different Palatine bar, citing the one she said went to before heading to the Lamplighter that night.
“Pay the fine and get on with life,” he said. “And go back to Durty Nellie’s.”
