ESPN, which apologized last year when it was among the media outlets to forget the White Sox won the 2005 World Series in the midst of Cubs fever, apparently has suffered another case of South Side amnesia.
A quickly deleted tweet before Tuesday’s World Series opener from the ESPN Stats & Info account (@ESPNStatsInfo) with a picture of the Dodgers’ Justin Turner during a National League Championship Series game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field said:
“The Dodgers are 7-1 this postseason. The 1998 Yankees are the only team in the Wild Card Era to win the World Series with 2 losses or fewer.”

While the tweet gets grammar points for use of “fewer” than “less,” it overlooks the fact the 2005 White Sox, who defeated the then-National League champion Houston Astros in the World Series, went 11-1 in the postseason.
The White Sox swept the Boston Red Sox, 3-0, and lost the opener of the best-of-seven American League Championship Series to then Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. But the White Sox rebounded, taking the next four from the Angels with complete games by Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia and Jose Contreras, then swept the Astros.
The 1998 Yankees swept the Texas Rangers, 3-0, and advanced to meet the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. The Indians won Games 2 and 3, and the Yankees won it in six games before sweeping the San Diego Padres in the World Series.
That means the 1998 Yankees were 11-2 in the postseason.
The 2005 White Sox, at 11-1, were better.
ESPN, a year ago to the day, talked up the Indians and Cubs meeting in the World Series with a chart purporting to show the championships Cleveland and Chicago had won since 1965.
The Cleveland side had only last year’s Cavaliers NBA title.
For Chicago, there were the Blackhawks’ 2010, ’13 and ’15 Stanley Cup titles, the 1985 Bears’ Super Bowl and the six Michael Jordan Bulls’ championships from the 1990s.
No 2005 White Sox. (And no Fire and Sting soccer championships.)
The 2005 White Sox dropped out of a lot of media narratives about the Cubs playing in their first World Series since 1945 and looking for their first title since 1908. (Spoiler alert: The Cubs won.) Among them: A washingtonpost.com post, a tweet from “CBS This Morning” and a Tribune editorial. Some were simply poorly worded, rather than ignoring the White Sox triumph and/or existence.
Initially, in response to last year’s snub, an ESPN anchor tried to offer a lame excuse about the White Sox omission on the chart then said he was sorry if people were upset.
ESPN later offered a more definitive statement, saying: “We expect better of ourselves and apologize for our mistake. No excuses, we made an error.”
Yet, a year later, it is making it again.
