Gambling is nothing new at Wrigley Field, as longtime bleacher denizens know, but the ballpark might be getting a legal sportsbook if the Chicago Cubs and DraftKings get their way.
The team on Thursday announced it has partnered with the Boston-based sports betting outfit and plans to establish DraftKings Sportsbook at Wrigley Field, pending necessary approvals.
No target date was offered for opening the facility.
The city of Chicago would need to sign off on the project, and there likely is to be scrutiny from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. Also required would be a license from the Illinois Gaming Board, which comes with a $10 million fee.
Written into last year’s state legislation to allow legal sports betting in Illinois was the opportunity for seven sports venues with capacities of 17,000 or more — such as Wrigley, Guaranteed Rate Field, Soldier Field, the United Center and Joliet Speedway — to open sports books within five blocks of the facilities.
Reports of the Cubs’ interest in setting up shop emerged almost immediately, making Thursday’s news unsurprising.
A sports betting facility for stadium fans is not unprecedented in this country.
There will be a sportsbook inside Capital One Arena, home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals, run by Britain’s William Hill firm. Because the COVID-19 pandemic has meant no games on-site, the company opened a temporary operation in an unused box office earlier this summer.
“An increasing number of sports fans want to integrate sports betting into their game experience, and we’re excited to be one of the first to engage in developing a retail sportsbook at a professional sports venue,” Crane Kenney, Cubs president of business operations, said in a statement.
The Cubs said the proposed sportsbook with DraftKings would offer online access in the area surrounding the ballpark.
DraftKings would be the sportsbook’s operator and apply for the state license. Illinois already is home to DraftKings at Casino Queen in East St. Louis, one of eight states in which it operates retail sports books.
“We look forward to working in collaboration with the Cubs, an organization steeped in tradition, and making our presence felt in and around Wrigleyville,” Matt Kalish, co-founder and president of DraftKings North America, said in a statement.
Action Network, a sports gambling media company in which Cubs ownership has invested, reported the value of the team’s DraftKings partnership at $100 million for a 10-year deal that includes being the team’s sports betting and daily fantasy partner.
Just a day before the Cubs announcement, DraftKings announced former Bulls great Michael Jordan, owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets and an avid gambler, will serve as a special adviser to its board in exchange for an equity stake in the company.
Comcast-owned NBCUniversal, an equity partner with the White Sox, Blackhawks and Bulls in NBC Sports Chicago, last week acquired a 4.9% stake in Australian bookmaking company PointsBet and announced it will be NBC Sports’ “official sports betting partner” for the next five years. The deal likely means NBCSCH will incorporate PointsBet gambling content into its various platforms.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, the Cubs’ partner in their Marquee Sports Network, has talked about ways to cash in on sports gambling. Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley told Reuters last year: “If you’re interested in gaming, we’re going to add on extra stats, the ability to do prop bets in the game, pitch by pitch, play by play. You can play along and wager while you watch.”
