Alex Carpenter scored in overtime to lift the United States over Canada 1-0 Monday night to win the women’s world hockey championship.
Carpenter banged home a rebound at 12:30 of the extra period to silence the sold out crowd at the Sandman Centre. Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Megan Bozek picked up the assists.
Alex Rigsby made 32 saves to earn the shutout for the US. Canada’s Emerance Maschmeyer turned away 33 of 34 shots and was named the top goaltender of the tournament.
Canada had two glorious chances to end the game in overtime, but was unable to capitalize with its power play.
The Canadians finished the game 0 for 6 with the man advantage while the US went 0 for 3.
The Americans have won the past three world championships and seven of the last nine overall.
The US and Canada have met in every final of the 17 women’s world championship to date.
