On Sunday night, the Chicago Bears released kicker Robbie Gould, who in his 11 years with the team had climbed to the top of the franchise’s all-time scoring list. Gould had opened every season since 2006 as the Bears kicker.
As far as points go, 2015 was Gould’s second best year with the Bears, with 127 points scored. But his year was actually pretty rough, as he missed a 36-yard field goal as time expired in an overtime loss to the 49ers on Dec. 20. A week later, a crunch-time 50-yard field goal that could have tied the game against the Redskins also missed.
The list of the NFL’s all-time leading scorers is dominated by kickers, as the numerous scoring opportunities presented by field goals and extra points tilt the odds in their favor. Gould currently sits in 40th place on that list.
