After watching a judge dismiss all of the charges against a man who allegedly injured his partner, a Chicago police officer openly criticized the decision in court Monday and was arrested on a contempt charge.
Officer Jeffrey Kriv, a 7-year veteran, spoke out after Judge Willie Wright tossed out charges against a man that Kriv and his partner had chased across several blocks on the Northwest Side on Dec. 1.
Edward Cardenas had been charged with reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer, driving on a revoked license, driving with no insurance, no valid registration and not having his seat belt buckled, police said.
After a short car chase, Kriv and his partner chased the suspect on foot before arresting him in the 1500 block of North Maplewood Avenue.
The partner was injured slightly in the incident, police spokesman David Bayless said.
But on Monday, Wright dismissed all the charges, saying the police did not have probable cause to stop Cardenas in the first place, Bayless said.
“The judge was upset with [Kriv’s] behavior after the case against a suspect he was in court for was dismissed,” Bayless said.
Kriv could not immediately be reached for comment.
