The Civil War raged from 1861 to 1865 between Union forces of the North and the forces of the Confederacy from the South. Slavery and other economic and political tensions set off the conflict that ripped a nation apart and left dead more than 600,000 soldiers from both sides. A local connection: Camp Douglas on Chicago’s South Side was used to house Confederate prisoners of war.
