The roof of a building at a horse stable in Morton Grove collapsed following the heavy snowfall overnight Monday into Tuesday, authorities said.

About 7:50 a.m., someone reported the arena roof at Glen Grove Equestrian Center caved in, Morton Grove Fire Chief Frank Rodgers said. The damage likely occurred about 6 a.m., he said.

The indoor training arena’s roof at 9453 Harms Road gave way due to “snow load,” Carl Vogel, a spokesman for the Cook County Forest Preserve District police, wrote in a statement.

No people or horses were injured, but the horses at an adjoining stable were moved out in case of further collapse, Rodgers said. Emergency crews also had to deal with a resulting gas leak.

Because of the collapse, the forest preserve district’s facilities and fleet department, with assistance from police, will demolish the indoor training arena starting Wednesday, Vogel said. Then a structural engineer will assess the rest of the building that is connected to the arena.

A representative from the stable declined comment.
