Metra trains on the SouthWest Service line were halted Wednesday night after a train hit a vehicle in Hometown and a pedestrian was then struck by the vehicle, officials said.
At about 7:30 p.m., train No. 833 hit a vehicle containing three people at West 87th Street and South Pulaski Road, said Metra spokeswoman Katie Dahlstrom. The vehicle then struck a pedestrian, leaving a total of four people hospitalized.
An adult was removed from underneath the train, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said, and was taken in grave condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Another adult was also taken to that hospital, while two adults were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and were in critical condition, Langford said.
The train was scheduled to arrive at Orland Park 179th station at 8:02 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation by Metra police.
The intersection has had at least two other serious crashes in the past six years. On December 2015, a Metra and car collision killed two passengers of that vehicle. About a month later, another grade-crossing accident happened and a driver was injured.
