A 12-year-old boy playing basketball in a South Side park was shot by bullets intended for someone else on Friday night, according to police.

The seventh grader was with several cousins playing ball at Mamie Till-Mobley Park, 6372 S. Ellis Ave., in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood when about 8:10 p.m.,they took a break and the boy sat down on a park bench.

Suddenly, five gunmen stepped from a gangway across the street and three of them opened fire, hitting the boy multiple times in both of his legs, police said.

The boy, who was an “unintended target” of the gunfire which happened in an area of gang conflict, was taken in fair condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

The assailants ran away and police said they were reviewing video surveillance from police cameras in the area to try and find them.

Twenty shell casings were found on the scene from a 9mm handgun.

Earlier, police said there was a second victim.
