Two teenage boys, 15 and 16, were fatally shot in the head about an hour apart Tuesday in different neighborhoods and Chicago police, investigating both as homicides, have detained three people in connection with the fatal attacks.

The 15-year-old was fatally shot about 3:15 p.m. in The Gap, a neighborhood near Bronzeville, and about an hour later the 16-year-old was shot in Woodlawn, in an apparently unrelated shooting — and he also later died, officials said.

Chicago police first were called to the 3300 block of South Prairie Avenue to investigate when a teenager, who had been standing near the sidewalk, was shot in the head, authorities said.

The 15-year-old was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m., according to a media notification from police and information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Wednesday morning, the medical examiner’s office identified the teen as Michael Brown.

Two people were being questioned by police in connection with the fatal shooting, police said.

In the shooting about an hour later, the 16-year-old was shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood, police said. The teen had been standing in the 6200 block of South Greenwood Avenue about 4:10 p.m. when he was shot in the head. He initially was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m., according to preliminary information from the medical examiner’s office. His name had not been released early Wednesday.
