There will be no Riot Fest for 2020, dashing hopes of outdoor festival music fans that the punk-focused festival might be able to find a way to continue, even after all the others, most notably Lollapalooza, have been canceled in the face of COVID-19.

Organizers are calling the move a “postponement” rather than a cancellation. Riot Fest was scheduled for Sept. 11-13 at Douglas Park. The 2021 dates will be Sept. 17-19, still at Douglas. Many headliners for 2020 will continue for the 2021 event, including My Chemical Romance, Smashing Pumpkins, Run the Jewels (by now, basically a Chicago band), Pixies, Vic Mensa, Lupe Fiasco and others.

Fans who have already purchased 2020 tix can either sit tight, or they have until July 16 to request a refund. What’s interesting about the way this is being handled is that most festivalgoers make attendance decisions based on a lineup, which makes the 2021 decision easy for music fans.

Riot Fest has also promised a special Thursday event for 2021, which will include “special performances from mystery bands. Ticketholders for the 2020 event, or anyone who buys a ticket in the next 30 days gets access to this event.

Visit the official site for more details, including lineup and information on the refund or ticket purchase process.
