International sport has the Summer Olympics, Lollapalooza has fence jumping. But instead of a gold medal, you get a ride with the police — if they can catch you.

Friday at the four-day festival was marked by numerous reports of fence “jumpers,” including one group who knocked down a section of fencing at an unspecified location. A video, posted by Jeremy Cohen on Twitter (which has since been removed), shows a group of at least a dozen people rushing past security. One was stopped by nearby police officers.

At about 4:35 p.m., Tribune reporter Bianca Sanchez witnessed six or more people successfully jump the fence near the Bud Light stage, at the north end of Lollapalooza. Onlookers cheered them on as they scattered into the crowd.

Fence jumping is a Lollapalooza rite of passage. In 2011, a mob rushed the fences at the festival. In recent years the event has taken steps to minimize fence jumpers, but they always seem to find a way. In 2018, a wedding party even crashed Lolla, but just to shoot engagement photos.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications said in a statement:

“Just after 2 p.m. today, approximately 50 people attempted to breach an exterior perimeter fence at Michigan Avenue and Balbo Drive. Both CPD and festival security responded immediately to the situation and resolved it within moments. As a result, no one was able to gain entry to the festival.

We have adjusted our resources to reinforce the security along the outer perimeter, and CPD and the event security have also added additional bike teams.”

It is unclear whether the above mentioned incident is the one included in the video making the rounds on social media, nor does it include the incident witnessed by the Tribune reporter, who writes:

“At the Bud Light stage as festival attendees waited for Maggie Rogers’ performance, a group of more than five but less than ten people successfully jumped the fence at stage right. Onlookers seeking shade nearby cheered them on. One straggler jumped a different section of fence a bit farther down from the original point of entry by the larger group.”
