This steel engraving by William Tombleson shows an Erie Canal lock in Lockport, N.Y., in 1840, not long after David Sprague Crandall traveled on the waterway. A series of locks in  Lockport raised the canal 50 feet up the Niagara Escarpment near the Lake Erie end of the canal.
