The official American version of Mother's Day was conceived by Anna Jarvis to commemorate her mother's death in 1905. In May 1908, she started the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in West Virginia, and in Philadelphia. In 1912, Jarvis established the Mother's Day International Association to help push for the holiday to be added to the national calendar.
