"The Art Lover" by Carole Maso is a nontraditional novel comprised of illustrations, newspaper clips, and art reproductions. "I found it at the Humane Society Thrift Shop in Boulder Colorado," Saifi says. "I hadn't heard of Maso before, but in this book, which blends narrative with pictures, there is a sudden narrative break, where the circumstances of the story she's telling are too dire for fiction, too immediate, and the book breaks like the heart of the narrator. It was an amazing move to make in a novel."
