The reactor buildings at the nuclear power plant in Zion, which ceased operation in 1998, were dismantled with most of the rest of the plant by ZionSolutions since 2012. But the decommissioning of the plant left Zion with such a massive loss of revenue that the city is still trying to right itself, and struggles with the highest property taxe rate in the county, according to State Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake. As a result, Bush led an effort to designate Zion as an enterprise zone, which will now provide the city with state financial incentives to attract development.
