The Rescission Act of 1946 | After being ceded to the U.S. after the 1898 Spanish-American War, the Philippines and its military forces were under American control and Filipinos were considered U.S. citizens. After the U.S. entered World War II, tens of thousands of Filipino soldiers enlisted and fought alongside their fellow Americans. Though they were initially promised the same veterans' benefits as members of the U.S. Armed Forces, the U.S. reneged on this promise through the Rescission Act of 1946, which said that wartime service in the Philippines did not qualify as military service. This allowed the U.S. to withhold $200 million in benefits to Filipino veterans. It wasn't until 2009 that the U.S. offered to finally repay this long-overdue debt. (Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
